The Magister of Chemistry Study Program at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University (PSKJM-FSM Undip), is one of the study programs within the Faculty of Science and Mathematics. The establishment of PSKJM-FSM Undip began in 2011 with the submission of a request for the opening of a new Magister (S2) Chemistry Study Program by FSM (then still known as FMIPA) to the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dirjen Dikti) via a letter from the Dean of FMIPA No. 2232/UN7.3.8/AK/2011, sent through the Rector of Diponegoro University on August 10, 2011.

Subsequently, the Academic Senate of Diponegoro University, led by Prof. Sudharto P. Hadi, MES, Ph.D., conducted an in-depth review, particularly regarding the sustainability and operational aspects of the proposed study program. The review concluded with the Academic Senate fully supporting the establishment of the Magister (S2) Chemistry Study Program. This support was formalized through the Statement of Support from the Academic Senate, letter No. 4789/UN7.P/DT/2011. Following this, the Rector of Diponegoro University submitted a formal request to open the Magister (S2) Chemistry Study Program at FSM Undip to the Directorate General of Higher Education via letter No. 4787/UN7.P/DT/2011, dated August 24, 2011.

As a demonstration of commitment, the Dean of FMIPA, Dr. Muhammad Nur, DEA, formed a Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of the Magister (S2) Chemistry Study Program at FSM through assignment letter No. 2754/UN.3.8/AK/2012 dated October 4, 2012. This committee was chaired by Dr. Parsaoran Siahaan, MS, and consisted of eight members. Time progressed, and on January 28, 2014, the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud), Directorate General of Higher Education, granted a mandate to Diponegoro University to establish the Magister (S2) Chemistry Study Program through letter No. 66/E.E2/DT/2014 addressed to the Rector of Diponegoro University. This letter was later responded to by the Dean of FSM (FMIPA) Undip with letter No. 2811/UN7.3.8/AK/2014 dated September 18, 2014, expressing readiness to accept and implement the mandate to open the Magister (S2) Chemistry Study Program. After a two-year waiting period, on April 14, 2016, the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia issued Decree No. 150/KPT/I/2016 regarding the Establishment of the Magister (S2) Chemistry Study Program at FSM Undip.

The Magister of Chemistry Undip curriculum is broadly based on the Circular of the Directorate of Higher Education Kemendiknas No. 232/U/2000, updated with the Regulation of the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 44 of 2015. The Magister (S2) curriculum load is a minimum of 40 credits, with Magister of Chemistry Undip requiring a minimum of 41 credits. Students must complete their studies over four semesters to meet this requirement. The curriculum consists of course units, a thesis (research project), seminars, and the master’s examination. The course units include mandatory and elective courses totaling 31 credits. The Magister of Chemistry Research Project is divided into two stages: Research Project I and Research Project II, each worth 4 credits. Research Project I takes place in Semester III and includes a thesis proposal, thesis proposal seminar, and research. Research Project II takes place in Semester IV and includes research, thesis writing, progress seminar, and the drafting of a scientific paper (to be published in a national or international journal/proceedings).

Magister of Chemistry Undip offers two specializations:

  1. Bioorganic Chemistry
  2. Inorganic Materials Chemistry

Each specialization includes one or two elective courses designated as mandatory for that track. Students are allowed to take courses from other specializations.
